World Water Monitoring Challenge (WWMC), which grew out of the past World Water Monitoring Day, was held at Tai Mei Tuk Raw Water Pumping Station on 27th October 2012 in conjunction with the launch ceremony of the "Let's Save Water" Cap Design Competition. WWMC is part of an international education and outreach programme with the objective of raising the awareness and involvement of the community in protecting water quality.
This year, in total of some 130 students and teachers from 5 different secondary schools participated in the event. There was a test demonstration done by WSD chemists to begin with, then students were provided with standard test kits to check the quality of water at Plover Cove Reservoir by measuring four basic indicators - temperature(℃), acidity(pH), dissolved oxygen(ppm) and turbidity(JTU) with the guidance of the chemists and teachers.
The test results showed that the raw water from Plover Cove Reservoir reached the temperature of 28 °C high. The average values of pH and dissolved oxygen level of water were 7 and 4 ppm respectively while the turbidity stayed at 40 JTU in general. In conclusion, the quality of water was in good condition.
