Highlights of T▪PARK

T▪PARK is a futuristic facility combining sludge treatment, environmental education and leisure. Being the first waste-to-energy facility in Hong Kong, it won awards in 2016 in the Design for Asia Awards organised by the Design Centre and the Green Building Award jointly organised by the Green Building Council and the Professional Green Building Council. To support the concept of “waste-to-energy” and to promote a sustainable waste management strategy, T▪PARK was built in Tsang Tsui, Tuen Mun by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD). The facility went into operation in 2015. It is capable of processing up to 2,000 tonnes of sludge per day. In the past, sludge was disposed of at landfills, and this new approach has greatly alleviated the burden of depleting limited landfill capacity in Hong Kong. T▪PARK is also the largest and most advanced facility of its kind, combining sludge incineration, power generation, seawater desalination and wastewater treatment. T▪PARK generates electricity for the facility's operational needs by recovering heat generated from the incineration process. Surplus power is exported to the power grid. It also practises a self-sufficient water management strategy by using desalination technology to produce fresh water for use on-site, and by adopting a zero-wastewater-discharge policy to reuse processed wastewater for cleaning and other purposes. An environmental education centre in T▪Park, launched in June 2016, is equipped with educational, recreational and ecological facilities. It provides opportunities for the public to enrich their knowledge of sustainable waste management, recycling and upcycling, as well as experience eco-living. With its innovative design and cutting-edge technologies, T▪PARK has attracted over 80,000 visitors since its launch. It has developed into a popular and well-received tourist destination.
