Water Supplies Department attained membership of Leading Utilities of the World

The Water Supplies Department (WSD) has been admitted as a member of the Leading Utilities of the World (LUOW) which is a network of the world’s top water and wastewater utilities. The LUOW has 32 members now, among which are renowned public utilities around the world.

The ability to use innovation to overcome challenges is an important yardstick with which the LUOW admits a utility as a member. At the Singagpore International Water Week 2018 held in July 2018, the Deputy Director of Water Supplies, Mr Chau Sai-wai, presented WSD’s innovation successes in three areas, namely, energy efficiency, information technology and smart water systems as well as treatment and quality of drinking water, and subsequently received the certificate of membership of LUOW.

The WSD has a long tradition of innovation: from building the world’s first reservoir in the sea back in the 1960-70s, to the smart use of caverns to house waterworks installations, the use of zebrafish to monitor continuously the raw water quality as well as the installation of floating photovoltaic systems on reservoirs to harvest renewable energy in recent years. Having attained membership of the LUOW is a testament of the WSD’s outstanding achievements in innovation.
