Objective

Water Supplies Department (WSD) receives a substantial number of requests for visit to water treatment works throughout the year, with the majority of visitors being primary and secondary schools students. WSD welcomes these visits during which public knowledge on water supply in Hong Kong can be enhanced. Through introducing our water treatment process, our mission to provide a reliable and adequate supply of wholesome potable water while remain conscious of our responsibilities towards the environmental protection can best be demonstrated.

The Visit

Sha Tin Water Treatment Works and Ma On Shan Water Treatment Works have been opened to schools and groups for visit since September 1994 and March 2005 respectively. Location plans of the water treatment works are shown on Attachment 1 and 2 PDF. Water treatment works staff will provide guidance and briefing during the visit. Participants should be of Primary 3 or above in order to understand the water treatment process.

Visiting Time

Sha Tin Water Treatment Works will accept visitors in Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays mornings, except Public Holidays.

Ma On Shan Water Treatment Works will accept visitors in Tuesdays and Thursdays mornings, except Public Holidays.

Each visit will last for approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes (from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.).

The main function of all water treatment works is to provide users service of water treatment. We sincerely hope that all visiting organisations would respect and abide to our rules and regulations in order not to interfere with the daily operation of our water treatment works.

Rules

  1. The students shall be of Primary 3 or above.

  2. Each visit group should consist of not more than 40 participants with at least 2 teachers/working staff (i.e. every 18-19 participants should be led by at least 1 teacher/working staff). For groups with participants aged over 60, or studying in Primary 3 or 4, every 8-9 participants should be accompanied by at least 1 teacher/working staff.

  3. Participants shall arrange for their own transportation.

  4. For safety of the visitors, those who require special care, who are aided by walking sticks or sit in wheelchairs, or children in prams or carried in arms are not allowed to enter the water treatment works for visit.

  5. In view of the substantial number of applications and to enable more interested parties to visit our water treatment works, each school or group would be allowed to pay only one visit to either one of the water treatment works during a year. Although we understand that your school may have more than one class of tudents in the same rank, due to the limit of resources and the principle of non-interference the daily operation of our water treatment works, teachers are expected to make the best arrangement for the students.

  6. Allocation of visit time slot will be on a first-come-first-served basis.

  7. Visit will be canceled if Black Rainstorm Warning Signal or Typhoon Signal No. 8 or above is hoisted at 7:00 a.m. on the date of visit.

  8. WSD reserves the right to cancel any pre-arranged visit with advanced notice given.

Application Procedures

  1. Fill in both the Application Form (Attachment 3) and the Form of Indemnity (Attachment 4) PDF and send to WSD either by fax or by mail.

  2. Within 10 calendar days upon receipt of the application, WSD will issue a letter informing the applicant of the result of the application.

Brief Introduction of Water Treatment Works


Sha Tin Water Treatment Works (Address : 12 Keng Hau Road, Sha Tin)

Sha Tin Water Treatment WorksSha Tin Water Treatment Works is the largest water treatment works in Hong Kong. It obtains its raw water from Plover Cove Reservoir, High Island Reservoir and Guangdong. The water treated by this water treatment works meets the demand in Sha Tin, parts of Ma On Shan, Central Kowloon and part of Hong Kong Island. This water treatment works was first commissioned in 1964 with a capacity of 364,000 cubic metres per day and was subsequently increased by phases to 1,227,000 cubic metres per day in 1983.

Ma On Shan Water Treatment Works (Address : Kwun Hang, Sai Kung)

Ma On Shan Water Treatment WorksMa On Shan Water Treatment Works is situated at Sai Kung. Its source of raw water is from Plover Cove Reservoir. The water treated by this treatment works meets the demand in Ma On Shan and parts of Shatin. The water treatment works was first commissioned in 1997 with a treated water output of 227,000 cubic metres per day.
